'Bollington Nostalgia Trails School Resource Pack'

This resource pack provides a unique set of materials for learners and teachers, based on the rich heritage and beautiful landscape of Bollington and the surrounding area but the activities are generic and can be applied to other locations. The eight Nostalgia Trails, developed by the Bridgend Centre in Bollington, have been used as a starting point for this project, which aims to help teachers deliver elements of Key stage 2 programmes of study through exploration of the local environment. This focus will bring an immediate relevance to the topics being studied, as well as opening children's eyes to  the wealth of history, science and nature on their doorstep. The resources can be used to maximise the learning opportunities offered by walking one or more of the Nostalgia Trails, or as a stand-alone units of work. Details of the eight Nostalgia Trails are included as an appendix and any of the Trails can be purchased from the Bridgend Centre.

The pack includes photocopiable information sheets, quizzes, photographic collages, teacher's notes and ideas for class activities. These are based around the themes of Transport, Quarrying, Mining, Mills, the Environment and 'Upstairs, Downstairs' (the difference between rich and poor). Included are picture sheets for Transport, Quarrying, Mining and Mill themes and photographs to set the scene for projects and initiate class discussion. Maps of Bollington and the surrrounding countryside are also included. Ideas, activities and photographs in the pack are designed as a springboard for projects and a table of links to other areas of the National Curriculum is included as an appendix. We hope that the pack will provide teachers with a rich and relevant context in which to deliver elements of the curriculum. We trust that children will enjoy walking the Trails and completing the activites, whilst gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of their local heritage and environment.
